Expressing those moments when we are deeply attuned to the experience in front of us, moments that are only felt with certain people or landscapes or artworks. These experiences have deep emotional resonance, are more memorable and make us acutely aware of the passage of time.
This experimental film uses camera angles, sound and editing not so much to convey action, as convey a character’s experience of the world. This is an area of interest for me.
Someone once told me I should paint subjects that give me a strong emotional response, whether positive or negative. I made these two oil portraits of my grandparents after they were diagnosed with dementia. They would look at me with this vacant expression. It was very frustrating and frankly, kind of an unpleasant experience.
